Its Been Quite a while....

Owen And Myself have been very involved in designing something for the installation. Here is just a little summary of what you may have missed.

1. Owen Gets this obsessive idea to inflate a hot air balloon. (He feels it will get a lot of attention)
2. We track down some people who are able to donate not 1 but 2-3/4 hot air balloons.
3. We take the balloons out to the site (the plaza) to get an idea of scale.
4. We think of ways to implement this material into the design.

OWN THE OCEAN

A prosthetic that enhances a swimmers ability to swim. The apparatus is designed to increase arm surface area on the back motion of the stroke. The fins move passively with the flow of the water to not add unnecessary drag during certain portions of the stroke.

Owen's and my approach was to look at how the body affects the path of an object. In this case it was a skateboard and a bike. The gymnast looks at the relationship between the body its appendages.

So if you haven't already heard Owen and I have teamed up to rip Arch 404 a new one. So far our attempts are slow, due to our inexperience with animation. Lets just say CS3 flash isn't our best friend right now. here is the work we have been able to produce so far with the help of illustrator and rhino. Stay tuned as we continue our quest to defeat Motion Capture.

For the next project "mutation 1" I decided to further explore this idea of form following form by digitally fabricating a guitar. I modeled a guitar body in form Z and then used Rhino to generate the rib structure as well as the form needed to cast it. I then salvaged parts off of one of my own guitars and attempted to be a luthier. In the end the guitar body, in my opinion, was success, and if I had more time I could have perfected this technique. As far as the guitar functioning as a guitar in the end was not so successful. Because I am not a luthier, it was very difficult getting the guitar set up so it could play( i.e action and intination). I do feel like this project did explore alternatives to not only to guitar construction techniques but as well as digital fabrication posibilities. I cant wait to add this guitar to the rest of my collection.

This was a look at how possibly a skin could be incorporated with a digital fabrication process that already exists. Problems arose, because the digital model was unable to simulate multi-planer curving that would potentially occur in the skinning materials. It was worth a shot and I am still very interested in finding a way to skin something with multi-planer curvatures.

Here is my board explaining the exploration I have done so far with digital fabrication. My scheme was to take a digitial fabrication process that already exist and find a way it could be implicated as a portion of the fabrication and less of the end product. I feel it was a success. Basically my approach is a three phase process. 1: design the form and digitally fabricate it. 2: Then cover the fabrication in a skin, such as melting acrylic, paper mache, or what ever you can get to conform to its shape. If you stop here you will still have a pretty intersting reslut. 3: if the material you used to cover the form is capable of holding liquid, you can then use it to cast with. I hope someoneout there , if not myself, is able to take this idea and further progress it to another level.

As promised here are the photos of my most recent digital fabrication endeavor.

I started out with a 3d model of a bust, no pun intended, created in Form Z and by using a mixture of tools (contour, 3d extrude and those wonderful booleans) was able to transform the model into a fabricative object. I exported the pieces to AutoCAD, where I then added the appropriate line weights for our school's laser cutter. The file took about 35 mins to cut and the model took about hour and a half to assemble.

just finished laying out my first, of hopefully many, digital fabrications. Its all ready to go for the laser cutter. I will have pics up as soon as i get it cut and assembled. i cant wait. its off to bed for me.

These rendering (created with form Z) attempt to recreate the quality of tectonic, light, and space documented in the early physical model shots. I feel they were successful for the most part. Enjoy!

Haptic Models

Time. Velocity. Network.

15 haptic models were created that best described each of these three concepts. These models were constructed of mostly left over studio material from previous semesters as well as using found objects. About 10-15 minutes were spent on each model. Models were then photographed to capture qualities of tectonics, light, and space.
